2018 Night Sky Field Trip

Many thanks to Bill Bogle for sharing his time and talent with this gang in learning to shoot night sky and the Milky Way.  A reschedule due to weather didn’t prevent this group from some great captures.  Enjoy their efforts.

Savannah 2018 Holiday Field Trip

A group of 20 had a fun day in Savannah enjoying the holiday decorations and viewing a downtown 3 story private home that was decorated fabulously for Christmas.

October 24-25 2018  Antebellum Trail Field Trip

A fun group of eleven explored some of this 100-mile trail with visits to five of the seven towns and cities which display the architecture and charm of the Antebellum period. We checked out five of these venues as we traveled 60 miles of the trail over two days. These towns were spared from Sherman’s destructive March to the Sea and have retained their classic Old South appearance and charm during the period from 1780-1861.

October 11th 2018  Sunset Cruise on Calibogue Sound

A group of seven club members took the first sunset cruise.  An unfortunate weather event caused a change of date or our group would have been much larger.  The boat left from South Beach on the “Salty Dog”, a 62 foot catamaran and enjoyed dolphins, sun and marsh during the golden hour!  There was live music on board for additional entertainment.

September 18 2018  Riverbanks Zoo and State House Grounds, Columbia, SC Field Trip

A group of seven club members went to the zoo!  This award winning zoo is home to over 2000 animals and a special botanical garden.  Lunch was at Tuskers Cafeteria in the zoo followed by a visit to the SC State House grounds on their way home. From the fun animal pictures it appears it was a great outing!!

June 25,26, and 27 2018  Asheville, NC, Biltmore, Blue Ridge Parkway – Great Smoky Mountains – Brevard and Carl Sandburg Home Field Trip

A small, but spirited group of club members took advantage of this overnight trip.  They had many great photography opportunities and a special chance to see the Dale Chihully, glass exhibit at Biltmore.

July 2018 Savannah Field Trip

A nice day trip to Savannah to tour the Telfair Museum Exhibit:  THE OPEN ROAD.  We walked up and down Jones St., around Forsyth Fountain, and had a wonderful lunch at the Gryphon Tea Room.  Another warm day, but great fun and photos!  Enjoy.

May 16 2018  Hunting Island Field

What a fun day at Hunting Island, but boy was it HOT!  The breeze on the beach was a life saver.  We had a group of 16 start out with us at lunch.  It’s curious to see how many ways we came up with to photograph a Lighthouse and dead trees!  It’s  amazing to see the variety of images these little slide shows end up with when we all went to the same place.  Beauty and creativeness is truly in the eye of the beholder.

May 2018 Overnight Field Trip to Florida Alligator Farm and Jacksonville Zoo

On May 1st a group of five club members traveled to Florida for an overnight trip to Jacksonville and St. Augustine.  They visited the Jacksonville Zoo and the St. Augustine Alligator Farm Zoological Park.  Rumor is they had a lot of fun and from the great images, it sure looks like the did!!

March 2018 Pinckney Island and Hilton Head Plantation Field Trip

On March 19th we all met at 8:30 sharp in the parking lot at Pinckney Island. This is the parking lot located after the gate about 300 yards down the road. It’s about a half mile walk from there to the Ibis Pond.  Lots of birds roosting.  Not a lot of babies, yet.  It’s  also a nice place for reflections, patterns, and other nature treats!

After we were done shooting we organized drivers to take us into Hilton Head Plantation, where we went to the Whooping Crane Conservancy. You’ll see from the slide show, the snake was a big attraction!  We were then off to a nice  lunch at The Street Meet restaurant in Port Royal Plaza. What a fun adventure and great weather day for our Pinckney Island and HHP Whooping Crane Conservancy field trip.  Enjoy the show!

March 2018 Beaufort Field Trip

On March 14, 13 Members traveled to the Beaufort Historic District, Santa Elena Museum and National Cemetery.   After stopping at the Visitor center at Claret St. for maps and restrooms, they took a two hour walking tour of the downtown and Bay Street area where commercial and residential historic buildings are in abundance for good architectural detail photography. After a wonderful lunch at The Lowcountry Produce Market and Cafe on Carteret St, they visited the Santa Elena History Center and Museum where the story of the first settlement on the east coast in 1566 is told. The final stop was at the Beaufort National Cemetery to photograph the thousands of graves of soldiers of conflicts from the civil war to today. Thanks again to John and Gerry for putting this together.  Enjoy the show!

February 2018 GA RR Museum and Bonaventure Cemetery Field Trip

On February 13th, 18 members traveled to Georgia State Railroad Museum in Savannah. We enjoyed a 2 hour “back stage” tour that incorporated the many interesting buildings including a roundhouse that was built in 1855; we also saw the paint shop, mechanical shop, and a number of restored locomotives along with classic rail cars. After lunch at the wonderful Crystal Beer Parlor, we went to Bonaventure Cemetery. The 160 acre cemetery has notable burials such as singer Johnny Mercer, Poet Conrad Aiken and the famous statue of six year old Gracie Watson. Thousands of ornate headstones, statuary and wrought iron fences made this a wonderful opportunity to photograph details and practice depth of field.

Not the warmest weather, but certainly the warmth of our group kept us enjoying the venues.  What amazing spots for unique photography.  I know I could probably go back daily for a week and find more things to snap an image of.  Can you image some of those outside scenes with a Carolina blue sky and clouds? Thank you to John and especially Gerry for arranging this one!!

January 2018  Marine Corp Air Station and Beaufort Field Trip

Nearly 20 members traveled to the Marine Air Station, Beaufort in January.  We went behind the scenes at the air base to see a demonstration of the capabilities of their guard dogs, and visited the hangar where they were servicing the aircraft.  We each got to climb a ladder and look in the cockpit of an F-18 Fighter Jet.  We had a lovely lunch at the Officers Club. We were allowed to take pictures with permission and as long as we did not take open panels on the planes or flight line images as they had lots of take offs and landings going on.
After lunch we traveled to Beaufort where we took a two hour walking tour of the Point which is the very historic residential area where many of the best homes are located.  The weather dried up and a fine time was had by all.  A big thank you to George Kops, former Marine, who helped put this trip together! Semper Fi!  Enjoy the show!
